Coverage plumbers carry
Almost every plumbing claim is a water claim, and water does not stay where the mistake was made. A fitting that weeps behind drywall becomes a ceiling, a floor and a mold remediation bill, which is why limits matter more here than in most trades.
General Liability
Third-party property damage and injury, including a joint that fails after the job is closed out.
Water damage is the claim that defines this trade, and it is usually a completed-operations claim: the leak starts weeks after you left. Expect GCs to ask for $1M / $2M.
Workers' Compensation
Medical bills and lost wages when a crew member is hurt in a trench, on a ladder, or lifting a water heater.
Required in nearly every state once anyone is on payroll. Service plumbing rates differently from new construction, so make sure the class code matches the work.
Commercial Auto
Service trucks and the fittings, torches, and machines they carry, liability, collision, and hired or non-owned autos.
Personal auto excludes business use, and a service van is business use every mile. Add hired and non-owned if anyone ever runs for parts in their own car.
Tools & Equipment
Drain machines, cameras, and press tools stolen from the truck or damaged on site.
A sewer camera and a locator cost more than most single jobs pay. Schedule the expensive items individually and let a blanket limit carry the hand tools.
Commercial Umbrella
Extra limits above general liability and auto when one leak runs through several floors.
One failed connection in a multi-unit building can exceed a $1M limit on its own. This is the trade where an umbrella most often turns out to have been necessary.
Commercial Property
Your shop, van bay, and stock of fixtures and fittings against fire, theft, and storms.
Only needed once you hold stock or lease a yard. Include business income so a fire does not stop the trucks going out as well as the phones being answered.
FAQFrequently Asked Questions
Yes: that's what completed-operations coverage under your general liability policy is for. It responds to damage that surfaces days or weeks after a repair, not just accidents that happen while you're on site.
Many state plumbing boards require both a surety bond and general liability insurance to issue or renew your license. They cover different things, and we'll make sure you have whichever your state requires.
Standard property coverage usually excludes equipment away from your shop. Inland marine, contractors' equipment coverage, is written specifically for tools, cameras, and jetting equipment in your vehicle or at a job site.
You still need general liability, and workers' comp in most states if you have help. Homeowner contracts and permits increasingly require proof of insurance too, not just commercial GCs.
